Speakers

According to the 2011 Census of India, there are approximately 2.7 million speakers who returned Bagheli as their mother tongue (often grouped under the broader umbrella of Hindi for census reporting purposes).

Distribution in India

Bagheli is predominantly spoken in the Baghelkhand region of central India. The core distribution spans the northeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh (including Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol, and Umaria) and the adjoining southern districts of Uttar Pradesh (such as Chitrakoot, Prayagraj, and Mirzapur).

Phonology: Features a contrastive set of aspirated and unaspirated stops, retroflex consonants, and a typical Indo-Aryan vowel inventory. Intervocalic /h/ deletion and subsequent vowel coalescence are common phonological processes.
